STUDIES IN LINE

Seated woman with a parasol, conté study, Georges Seurat

Exhibition highlights

STUDIES IN LINE

Before the dots came the lines. Studies in Line presents seventy of Georges Seurat's drawings in conté crayon and chalk — velvety, nocturnal works he considered finished art, not preparation.

The exhibition follows a single figure from pocket sketch to monumental canvas: the seated woman with a parasol appears here in six states, ending beside the great riverside scenes she was drawn for. Low light, close hanging and magnifiers make this our most intimate show in years.

A working studio in the second room demonstrates conté technique daily, and visitors may try the broad paper and soft crayon Seurat favored.
