CITY RHYTHMS IN COLOR

Improvisation No. 30, swirling abstract color, Vasily Kandinsky, 1913

Exhibition highlights

CITY RHYTHMS IN COLOR

When the modern city learned to move fast, painting learned to move faster. City Rhythms in Color gathers the pioneers of abstraction — Kandinsky above all — at the moment the street became music and the canvas became a score.

Forty works trace the leap from representation to pure feeling: trembling streetcars, cannon fire heard as color, landscapes dissolving into chords. At the center hangs Improvisation No. 30 (Cannons) of 1913, the Fennimore's most requested modern work, shown with the studies that led to it.

Listening stations pair each room with the music the painters heard — Wagner, Schoenberg, street bands — and a final gallery invites visitors to paint their own improvisation at digital easels.
