NOVEMBER IN THE MUSEUM

Van Gogh's Bedroom, a quiet painted interior in blue and gold

NOVEMBER IN THE MUSEUM

Shorter days, longer looking: the autumn program brings lantern-lit evenings, slow-art mornings and new rooms to get lost in.

There is a particular hour in November when the skylights go amber and the whole museum seems to exhale. We built this autumn's program around that hour: slower visits, quieter rooms, and art that rewards the long look — Van Gogh's Bedroom chief among them, a painting about rest that makes viewers rest.

Friday evenings stretch until 21:00 with music in the rotunda and the paper lanterns lit one by one. Sunday mornings begin with an hour of reduced sound and light for visitors who prefer their museums hushed. Wednesday sketch club moves indoors to the Dutch Rooms, pencils provided.

All four autumn exhibitions overlap in November — the one month you can walk from Kandinsky's chromatic city to Seurat's velvet drawings to Van Gogh's quiet bedroom in a single afternoon. Members enter early on the first Sunday of the month; the lanterns, as always, are lit at dusk.

See the full calendar on the events page, and reserve Friday evenings ahead — they have sold out every week since September.
